The emotions
There is something about Kolkata food that hits differently- It’s not just taste, its emotion. if you ever lived there or even visited once, you’ll know how certain dishes stay with you forever.
Here are 5 dishes that instantly take me back to streets and the homes of Kolkata.
1. Luchi and Aloo Bhaja:
Soft, fluffy Luchis paired with spicy, slightly sweet Aloo Bhaja- this is comfort on plate. It reminds me of slow Sunday mornings and family breakfasts.

2.Ilish or Hilsa Tel Jhal:
Nothing defines Bengali cuisine like Ilish. The sharp taste of mustard or Posto flavors, green chilies, and fresh Ilish Mach, creating a taste that’s bold and unforgettable. Ilish Tel-Jhal is one such humble preparation that marks every Bengali bhoj and celebrations.

3. Basonti Pulao and Kosha Mangsho
One of the most flavorful and delicate rice preparations. I absolutely love the combination of Basonti Pulao and Mutton Kosha. It is a perfect meal for me to celebrate Durga Puja. The Navami menu seems incomplete without this combo.

4. Kolkata style Mutton Biryani:
It will be an absolute injustice if I don’t include this dish. The Kolkata Mutton biryani is as iconic as it sounds. One simply cannot avoid this simple yet flavorful preparation of Biryani, it has a legacy in Kolkata. if you have never tried Kolkata Biryani, you are missing a royal treat.

5. Kolkata style Goja:
Sweet is an integral part of Bengali food culture. Especially Sweets with “Rosh”. Roshogulla, Roshbhora, Jolbhora and Rajbhog etc. But I find ‘Goja’ to be one such sweet that steals the show. It is one of the most oldest and simplest form of sweet prepared at home. It has the perfect combination of sweetness, crunch and softness. That is why “Goja” takes a place in my list.

These dishes aren’t just food-they are emotions, memories and a piece of Kolkata that never leaves you. If you have ever tried any of these dishes, which one is your favorite?
