Five Best Places to Dine in Kolkata

Kolkata is very well known for its food culture. It is also a home to many popular dishes that marks the Indian Cuisines. The city of joy truly stands number one when it comes to this particular obsession. From Biryani to Mutton Kosa, Bhapa Hilsa to Prawn tempura and from Roshogulla to chocolate mud pie the city has it all. I have been living in Kolkata for three years and visited more than 50 restaurants. However, till now there are few places that I just can’t ignore and keep going back,  whenever I feel like having meal to fill my soul.

6 Ballygunge Place

A traditional meal is always a good idea while travelling to someplace else and when in Kolkata a Bengali meal is a must. There are many popular  restaurants proudly serving authentic Bengali cuisine and everyone has something unique to offer. However, my pick for a traditional meal has always been 6 Ballygunge Place. This place serves some of the most beautiful traditional delights that takes you to the heart of a Bengali home and compels you to come back again. The Restaurant has many outlets in kolkata, the main being situated at Ballygunge.

Jinty’s tip:  A must try – Kosha Mangsho, Ilisher tel jhal and Bhapa Doi or Baked Sondesh.

Tamara

Tamara is one of the dining outlets of the Pipal Tree Hotel in Kolkata, situated in the Major Arterial Road, New Town. The restaurant is popular among the foodies for its outstanding food and beautiful and unique ambience. Tamara provides a wide variety of cuisines that draws inspiration from around the globe such as, the Chinese, Italian, American, Thai and French. Altogether offering an exotic menu to the food lovers. This unique blend of Indian, Oriental and continental cuisines of Tamara makes it a perfect destination for a fine dinging experience in Kolkata. Ambience, Hospitality and Food are the three important components that make a dining experience divine and Tamara in this case is an absolute haven. From family friendly to romantic candle light dinner, Tamara offers every Bit of the Magical experience.

Jinty’s Tip: A must try- Chocolate Mud Pie, Chelo platter and Cream Of Asparagus soup.

Yauatcha

My pursuit for that perfect Dim-sum and Chinese delicacy introduced me to Yauatcha. It is one of the premium restaurants of Kolkata and also the one having a Michelin star. This restaurant is a high rated fine dining franchises from abroad, situated at the fifth floor of quest mall in Kolkata. The place serves exotic Cantonese and Oriental Delicacy and  provides a fine dining experience with outstanding quality of the food and absolutely stunning ambience. Although, a little pricey but the excellent taste of food makes it a place worth visiting.

Jinty’s tip: A must try-  Jasmine tea cake, Prawn cheung fun and Pakchoi wrapped dumplings.

Yauatcha

Bombay Brasserie

Although, there is no dearth of restaurants serving Indian cuisines in Kolkata, I always felt like going back to this Place. Situated beside Yauatcha on the fifth floor of Quest mall, this excellent restaurant is another popular fine dining destinations in kolkata. This place is serving a variety of Indian dishes in style.  The menu of this place takes its diners on a culinary journey  across India, consisting of some of the all time favourites from different parts of the country. From Maharashtra to Rajasthan, Konkan to Kerela the flavours of India under one roof and in a plate. Meanwhile, the quirky presentation skills and relaxed decor of the restaurant has definitely been able to give a twist of taste to the same old Indian dishes. Thus, Bombay Brasserie indeed remains an all time favourite.

Jinty’s Tip: A must try- Crackling Tamatar Soup, Lucknowi Paraatha Paneer, Chur chur Paratha, Amritsari Kulfi and Bombay Dabba Gosht.

Mughlai and Awadhi cuisines are one of the most loved cuisines in India, hence, Kolkata is also of no exception. Meanwhile, Oudh 1950 is a beautiful concept in itself.  The Restaurant has a number of outlets at different locations of  Kolkata, such as, Deshapriya Park, Salt lake and Southern Avenue. It is a place known for a royal experience that takes its diners to Awadh (Lakhnow) through its exceptional dining experience. With the aim of providing a “Period dining” experience, this place has successfully created an ambience and a perfect menu that serves the purpose. The restaurant has an old world charm and introduces its diners with the traditional Nawabi culture through offering a wide range of Awadhi and Mughlai dishes.

Jinty’s Tip: A must try- Biryani  (Awadhi Handi Biryani), Galawati Kabab, Zafrani Kabab, Shahi Dahi Kabab, Awadhi Dum Aloo and Shahi Tukda.

There is no doubt that the city of Joy has much more to offer in terms of Food and Fine dining. Perhaps its a task in itself to explore such destinations and these are only a few of such discoveries. These are some of the places that I have come across till now and found perfect to satisfy my cravings for good food.
